See her Artist's Statement beneath this article. MARIA DE LOS ANGELES CORNEJO We have followed the story of Maria de Los Angeles Cornejo since her days at Santa Rosa Junior College and rallied behind her as she raised funds to meet her scholarship obligation to the prestigious Pratt Institute of Art & Design. We saw her succeed at Pratt and enjoyed her summer exhibits here at home. On May 14, Maria de Los Angeles will be graduating from Pratt Institute and heading off to Yale University for her masters in fine arts degree. The journey hasn’t been without drama. In February of this year, Maria de Los Angeles along with 34 other seniors, lost all of her work in a raging fire that destroyed several studios in the school’s historic Main Building. Maria was in shock. “Disasters are unexpected and devastating. It was hard because I had the work for my thesis show in my studio which was scheduled for two weeks or so after the fire. My thesis group show was eventually cancelled. I was very worried about my upcoming Yale interview. The work I was bringing to the interview was also destroyed so I had to create new work for my interview at Yale. The work had to be brought in person to the interview. All my art supplies were gone and I faced the need to create work. I knew that I needed to do everything possible so that I would do my best at the interview. It took about twenty days for me to get back in the mood to work. I think most of the students, including myself, experienced a sense of loss and depression in some cases. It made it hard to work, and attend all the meetings and talks. Still, our school did a great job of being there for us. Getting accepted into Yale after all this made me feel very happy and I think it lifted the spirits of my professors and other students. It was great news. To this day I am so immensely happy about Yale.” After the fire, famed art dealer Larry Gagosian, was moved to sponsor a show for the seniors who had lost their work. This has helped motivate Maria and her fellow students to create new work. When Maria graduates, she will be receiving the Merit Award for Fine Arts, the highest honor for Fine Arts students and has been selected to show her work at an exhibition honoring top graduates in each concentration. “I am so happy to be graduating from Pratt Institute. The graduation is taking place at Radio City Music Hall which is amazing. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me and helped me achieve this. Pratt has been fantastic place and it has prepared me for what is next. Yale University Masters Program in Fine Arts is going to be a great place for me. I have a lot to learn and I think Yale has the best program for me. I have to tell you that I am amazed that I am going there and at some moments feel that it might be just a dream, but it is true. I am going there. Thinking back on my life as an immigrant, coming to the USA with my family and all that has happened along the way, it is hard to believe that I am going to the top program in the country for my major. I am really grateful to all the people that have been there for me; the SRJC Art department, Alan Azhaderian, Dona Larsen, and all of my other professors. I hope to become a better artist each day, a better person and pay it forward by helping others like my community has helped me.” Maria de Los Angeles will exhibiting her new works this summer at the studio of Jack Leissring at 622 Davis St. Santa Rosa, Ca on August 10,11,17,18 from 1pm–4pm.
